United National Party (UNP) Chairman Vajira Abeywardena suggested today that the current Prime Minister, Dinesh Gunawardena, is likely to retain his position if the sitting President wins the upcoming Presidential election.
Abeywardena drew parallels with past events, noting that when the late Ranasinghe Premadasa was Prime Minister, he continued in his role after the late President J.R. Jayewardene won the 1982 Presidential election. Similarly, the late Ratnasiri Wickramanayake remained Prime Minister after Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga’s victory in the 1999 Presidential election, even after she formed her second Cabinet.
Abeywardena highlighted this pattern in response to a journalist’s question, suggesting it is common for the Prime Minister to continue in office if the incumbent President wins re-election.
