Colombo, April 9, 2024 — In a recent development, the Acting General Secretary of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), Sarathi Dushmantha Mithrapala, representing the SLFP faction led by Maithripala Sirisena, has raised concerns regarding the appointment of Nimal Siripala de Silva as the Acting Chairman of the party.
According to the SLFP party constitution, only the chairman of the party holds the authority to convene a Politburo meeting. Any decision or request made during such a meeting must be presided over by the chairman. In a letter addressed to Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, Mithrapala emphasized this constitutional provision.
However, recent events have unfolded in contradiction to the party’s constitution. Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, currently serving as the Senior Vice President of the SLFP, called for an SLFP Politburo meeting without a duly appointed chairman. This move comes after the Colombo District Court issued an interim restraining order on April 4, preventing former President Maithripala Sirisena from functioning as the party’s chairman.
The SLFP faction led by Maithripala Sirisena asserts that any appointment of an Acting Chairman must be conducted through a Court order. Furthermore, they highlight that several participants in yesterday’s SLFP Politburo meeting were not official members of the party.
In response to these irregularities, the SLFP faction has announced its intention to take legal action against the illegal actions taken during the meeting. The situation remains tense as the party grapples with internal divisions and legal complexities.
