Ratnapura, June 11 (The reporter) – A family seeking refuge at the home of a prominent gem businessman in Ratnapura, after being affected by floods, has allegedly stolen gemstones worth Rs. 25 million, according to police reports.
The family, consisting of a father, mother, and son, was provided with meals and shelter for two days by the businessman. The Ratnapura Police Special Investigation Division has since arrested the family.
After the floodwaters receded, the family departed with a promise to return and help clean the businessman’s house. They returned a few days later and, during the cleaning process, removed the gemstones.
Their theft was captured on CCTV. The family has admitted to the crime and is set to be presented before the Ratnapura Magistrate.
