Colombo, May 21 (The reporter) – A contempt of court application has been filed before the Supreme Court against former State Minister Diana Gamage, alleging that she committed the offense of contempt of court through statements made at a media conference on May 9 this year.
Former Chairman of the Weligama Urban Council, Rehan Jayawickrema, filed this application, alleging that Diana Gamage made statements intended to disrespect the authority of the Supreme Court as provided in Section 3(1)(a) of the Contempt of a Court, Tribunal, or Institution Act No: 8 of 2024.
On May 8, the Supreme Court ruled in a landmark judgment that then State Minister Diana Gamage is disqualified from being a Member of Parliament and is not entitled to hold office as she is not a citizen of Sri Lanka.
The petitioner stated that at the media conference, Diana Gamage portrayed herself as a victim of injustice, claiming that the Supreme Court’s decision was an attack on women and part of a political conspiracy based on hate and vengeance.
The petitioner further stated that Diana Gamage’s statements were made maliciously to diminish the impact of the judgment in the public’s mind and to portray herself as a victim of wrongdoing and the Supreme Court’s judgment as wrongful.
