The Colombo District Court has extended the injunction barring former President Maithripala Sirisena from serving as the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party until May 9th.
This decision follows a request by former President Chandrika Bandaranaike, who sought a permanent injunction due to Sirisena’s perceived unsuitability for the role.
During recent court proceedings, Bandaranaike’s legal team highlighted that Sirisena’s continued chairmanship violates the party’s constitution.
They pointed out that while Sirisena is eligible to hold the position during his elected term, he should assume the role of patron after his presidency ends, as outlined in the party’s governing document.
he lawyers argued that Sirisena holding both positions simultaneously is not in accordance with the party’s constitutional framework.
