New Laws Planned to Control Wetland Destruction and Illegal Constructions

Colombo, June 10 (The reporter) – New laws are set to be enacted to control the destruction of wetlands, including illegal constructions, as per Housing, Construction, and Cultural Affairs Ministry Secretary W.S. Sathyananda. The Ministry is negotiating with all government agencies to reach a common consensus.

During a media briefing, Sathyananda stated that this consensus aims to create a program that integrates all available knowledge to implement these policies, positioning the country as a model for wetland conservation and biodiversity protection.

The briefing was held to announce the first conference of the International Wetland Park Association in Australia, New Zealand, and Asia, scheduled from June 17 to 21 at Diyasaru Park, Battaramulla.

“We also aim to implement stringent laws against wetland destruction. It is a challenging task for our organization to manage wetland protection alone. Therefore, public support is essential. Wetlands can resolve many environmental issues and aid in flood control by providing 39% more water-holding capacity. Various programs have been organized to leverage wetlands for tourism, thereby strengthening the economy,” Sathyananda said.
