Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, the incumbent Vice President of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), has assumed the role of Acting Chairman of the SLFP. This appointment was made during the party’s recent Politburo meeting held at the Sri Lanka Foundation Institute on the morning of April 8.
The emergency meeting of the SLFP Politburo, convened under the leadership of former President Chandrika Bandaranaike Kumaratunga, addressed the expulsion of several senior party members, including Minister Mahinda Amaraweera, State Minister Lasantha Alagiyawanna, and Parliamentarian Duminda Dissanayake. During this meeting, the decision to appoint the new Acting Chairman of the SLFP was finalized.
Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva, also the Senior Vice President of the SLFP, called for the Politburo meeting. Notably absent from the gathering were former President Maithripala Sirisena, Dayasiri Jayasekara, and Shan Wijayalal De Silva. The meeting aimed to deliberate on the party’s future activities in light of the challenges currently faced by the SLFP.
Following the Politburo meeting, MP Duminda Dissanayake, the National Organiser of the SLFP, was designated as the Acting General Secretary of the party by fellow Politburo members.
