Colombo, May 1 (The reporter) – Political parties are gearing up for their annual May Day demonstrations with more than 22 rallies scheduled across the country today.
Both political parties and various organizations are organizing these events, according to police reports.
The SLPP will convene at Campbell Park in Borella, while the UNP’s rally will take place in front of P. D. Sirisena Ground in Maradana. The Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) plans to hold two rallies this year, one at Chatham Street and another in Thalawakele, accommodating allies who requested a separate gathering.
The National People’s Power (NPP) is scheduled to host four rallies and processions, including events in locations such as Anuradhapura, Jaffna, and Matara. The Frontline Socialist Party will assemble at Hyde Park, and the Communist Party at Lalith Athulathmudali Park in Kirulapone. Additionally, the United Socialist Party will gather at Kosgas Handiya, and the Lanka Sama Samaja Party (LSSP) at Ananda Samarakoon Open Air Theatre Nugegoda. The Ceylon Workers Congress will hold its rally in Kotagala.
The UNP is mobilizing supporters with special trains departing from various districts. Chairman Vajira Abeywardana announced that trains will commence from Belliatta, Ahangama, and Aluthgama, making stops at stations along the way before arriving in Maradana.
SJB’s procession and rally are focused on upcoming elections, as stated by General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara and Elections Campaign Manager Sujeewa Senasinghe. They emphasized collaboration with working people to build a brighter future.
Police anticipate significant road closures and have deployed 2,100 officers for security and 1,300 for traffic management. The Colombo Municipal Council estimates that around one million people will converge in Colombo for the May Day rallies.
