President Ranil Wickremesinghe has acknowledged that postponing the Local Government elections was a violation of citizens’ basic rights but stated that he does not regret the decision.
He explained that his lack of remorse stems from the focus on ensuring the people’s right to live and maintaining their safety during this period.
This statement follows a Supreme Court ruling which determined that the President, as the Minister of Finance, along with the former members of the Election Commission, violated the fundamental rights of the people by postponing the 2023 Local Government elections.
The President stressed his respect for both the right to vote and the right to live.
He made these remarks at the National Conference of the New People’s Front (NPF) held at the National Youth Services Council auditorium in Maharagama this afternoon (22).
The President further clarified that if he had prioritized conducting the Local Government elections, achieving economic stability would have been compromised.
