Reduced New Year Drinking Results in Decreased Alcohol-Related Quarrels

Colombo, May 09 (The reporter) – A recent survey conducted by the Alcohol and Drug Information Center (ADIC) in Sri Lanka has highlighted a decline in incidents of conflict and quarrels associated with alcohol use during the Sinhala and Tamil New Year festival. The survey, which included 415 individuals from all nine provinces of Sri Lanka, revealed that 70.8% of participants observed fewer alcohol-related conflicts compared to the previous year.

According to the survey findings, 64% of respondents noted a reduction in alcohol consumption during this year’s celebrations compared to the previous year. Factors contributing to this decline included increased alcohol prices (cited by 71.5% of participants), opposition from family members, health concerns, changing perceptions about alcohol’s purpose, and reduced availability.

Despite the National Authority on Tobacco and Alcohol (NATA) Act prohibiting alcohol and tobacco advertising, 71.4% of survey participants reported encountering alcohol promotions on social media during the festivities.
