Colombo, April 23 (The reporter) – According to sources, certain MPs affiliated with both the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) and the ruling Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) have allegedly assisted in securing liquor licenses from the government for their associates, reportedly in exchange for substantial commissions. The issue came to public attention following inquiries from religious leaders in districts like Kandy regarding the purported establishment of liquor outlets and the individuals involved in obtaining licenses.
In one instance, prospective entrepreneurs mentioned the names of several SJB MPs who purportedly aided them in obtaining licenses. This revelation has prompted SJB leader Sajith Premadasa to pledge an investigation into the matter.
The issue is expected to be addressed during the parliamentary group meeting later today. It is widely acknowledged that the issuance of liquor shop licenses often occurs under political influence, with politicians themselves or their proxies owning such establishments.
In another development, tensions within the SJB parliamentary group are anticipated, as the party’s General Secretary, Ranjith Madduma Bandara, is set to question MPs who allegedly received government funds for development projects in their electorates without prior approval from the party leadership.
