Colombo, June 26 (Tje reporter) – The Ceylon Teachers’ Union (CTU) has announced the continuation of their sick leave campaign for a second day in protest against the use of tear gas and water cannons to disperse demonstrators. This was confirmed by CTU General Secretary Joseph Stalin.
Stalin stated to the Daily Mirror that today’s trade union action was successful, with a significant number of teachers, principals, and teacher instructors gathering at the Fort Railway Station to advocate for their demands.
“We will persist with our strike tomorrow and have decided not to participate in the second round of paper marking for the GCE Ordinary Level examinations,” he said.
“Many schools operated without teachers today. While we do not wish to inconvenience the children, we are fighting for our rights. The responsibility for the disruption to schoolchildren lies with the Education Ministry. It is unjust to use tear gas and water cannons to disperse us as we were there to voice our demands. If the government continues to respond in this manner, we will extend our strike,” he added.
